Ambon Island lies close to the south west coast of Seram (Ceram) in the Maluka (Molucca or Spice) Islands. During the Second World War, Ambon was the site of a Dutch military base which was captured from the Allied forces by the Japanese forces in the Battle of Ambon (February 1942). The base was used by the Japanese as a Prisoner-of-War Camp where many prisoners died of overwork, malnutrition, disease and the brutality of the camp regime.
