Hugh Young was born on 3 November 1900 in the townland of Ballyskeagh, Newtownards, and he was the second surviving son of Hugh and Sarah Boyd Young (nee Gibson) who were married on 6 January 1886 in Regent Street Presbyterian Church, Newtownards.  Hugh Young (aged 26), a farmer from Ballyskeagh, Newtownards, was a son of James Young, a farmer (deceased).  Sarah Boyd Gibson (aged 20) from Whitespots, Newtownards was a daughter of Hugh Gibson, a farmer.

Hugh and Sarah Boyd Young (nee Gibson) had at least eight children:

William James (born 4 December 1886 in Ballyskeagh)

Anna (born 23 December 1888 in Ballyskeagh; died of acute laryngitis 5 January 1893 in Ballyskeagh)

Mary Eleanor (born 1 March 1891 in Ballyskeagh)

Andrew Boyd (born 5 May 1893 in Ballyskeagh; died of scarlatina 1 October 1893 in Ballyskeagh)

Sarah (born 27 September 1894 in Ballyskeagh; died 22 May 1928)

Elizabeth (Lizzie born 17 June 1897 in Ballyskeagh; died 26 November 1978)

Hugh (born 3 November 1900 in Ballyskeagh)

John Andrew (born 21 December 1903 in Ballyskeagh; died 21 June 1991)

The first three children were baptised in Regent Street Presbyterian Church Newtownards.

Hugh Young was 22 when he moved to Australia where he intended to farm.  On 26 April 1923 he sailed on his own from London to Adelaide aboard the SS Borda.   During the Second World War, Hugh Young served with 2/5th Battalion, Australian Infantry.  He was the husband of Jessie Young of Maylands, Western Australia and he was 42 when he was killed on 6 February 1942 in Papua New Guinea.

Private Hugh Young (No. WX14050) was buried in Lae War Cemetery and there is an inscription on his CWGC headstone:





His family in Newtownards placed a Killed on Active Service notice in the 15 May 1943 edition of the Newtownards Chronicle and it contained the verse:

Sunshine passes, shadows fall,

But loving memories outshine all

Private Hugh Young (No. WX14050) is commemorated on the Australian War Memorial (Panel 31).

His father Hugh died on 13 August 1937 (aged 82) and his mother Sarah died on 28 May 1956 (aged 90).  Both were buried in Movilla Cemetery, Newtownards.
