BIOGRAPHY

In the CWGC Debt of Honour website it is recorded that Sergeant Patrick Leslie Whitehouse (No. 3383453) was the husband of Maud Whitehouse of Holywood.

Patrick Leslie Whitehouse and Maud Maguire Savage were married on 2 December 1940 in Holywood Parish Church of Ireland Church (St Philip and St James).  Patrick Leslie Whitehouse (aged 26), a Corporal in the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment stationed in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, was a son of Leslie Howard Whitehouse, a foreman.  Maud Maguire Savage (aged 23), a shop assistant from 11 High Street, Holywood, was a daughter of James Savage, a soldier.  Their marriage was conducted by the Rev Charles Manning who had been an Army Chaplain during the Great War.

Patrick Leslie Whitehouse was born on 29 April 1914 in the townland of Dunmurry, Naas, Co Kildare, Republic of Ireland, and he was a son of Howard Leslie (Leonard) Whitehouse and Anne (Annie) Whitehouse (nee Fitzgerald) who were married on 25 May 1912 in the Roman Catholic Church of St Brigid’s, Kildare.  Howard Leonard Whitehouse, a soldier stationed in Kildare Barracks, was a son of Edward Whitehouse, a mechanic.  Annie Fitzgerald from Dunmurry, Co Kildare was a daughter of Patrick Fitzgerald, a farmer.

Howard Leslie (Leonard) Whitehouse and Anne (Annie) Whitehouse (nee Fitzgerald) had at least two children:

Leonard Edward (born 28 October 1912 in Coombe Hospital, Dublin)

Patrick Leslie (born 29 April 1914 in Dunmurry, Naas, Co Kildare)

During the Second World War Sergeant Patrick Leslie Whitehouse (No. 3383453) served with the East Lancashire Regiment and he was 30 when he died on 22 September 1944 at Valkenswaard in the Netherlands.

[Valkenswaard was the first village to be liberated on the main line of the Allied advance into Holland in September 1944.]
