BIOGRAPHY

Robert Orr Thompson was born on 18 March 1919 in Mill Street, Newtownards, and he was the elder son of Samuel and Anna Thompson (nee Orr) who were married on 30 October 1918 in Ballygilbert Presbyterian Church.  Samuel Thompson, a fowl dealer from Newtownards, was a son of Robert James Thompson, a grocer.  Anna Orr from Newtownards was a daughter of Robert Orr, a produce merchant.

Samuel and Anna Thompson (nee Orr) had at least five children including:

Robert Orr (born 18 March 1919 in Mill Street, Newtownards)

Walter S (born around 1927/1928; died 23 November 1933)

The Thompson family lived at 133 Greenwell Street, Newtownards

Robert Orr Thompson was educated in Castle Gardens Public Elementary School in Newtownards.  He joined the Life Boys and later the Boy Scouts.  After leaving school he was employed by William McConnell, rate collector, Newtownards and subsequently worked for the firm of Messrs Webb and Company, Newtownards.  He was an accomplished pianist and a member of Lord Londonderry’s Own Church Lads Brigade (CLB) Flute Band in Newtownards.

Robert Orr joined the Royal Artillery in February 1938 and he was killed in action on 1 May 1941.  Poignantly, on the day before his mother received the telegram informing her that her son had died, she received a cheerful letter from him assuring her that he was well.  Lance Bombardier Robert Orr Thompson (No. 876648) was 22 when he died, and he was buried in Tobruk War Cemetery, Libya.  There is an inscription on his CWGC headstone:

BUT GONE TO BE

WITH CHRIST ABOVE
