Thomas G. Morton and his wife, who lived at 87 South Street, Newtownards, placed a Result of Enemy Action death notice in the 19 April 1941 edition of the Newtownards Chronicle commemorating the deaths of his father Thomas Morton, his sister Ellen Ogle Tate, and his two nieces, Bessie Tate, and Evelyn Tate, who were all killed on 16 April 1941 as the result of enemy action.
Born around 1926/1927, Evelyn Tate was a daughter of George Linden Tate and Ellen Ogle Tate (nee Morton) who were married on 22 March 1924 in Belfast Domestic Mission for the Poor.
On 16 April 1941 four members of the family died at 174 Manor Street, Belfast – Ellen Ogle Tate (nee Morton), her daughters Bessie and Evelyn and her father Thomas Morton.
The Belfast Blitz comprised high-casualty German Luftwaffe air raids on Belfast in April and May 1941. On the night of Easter Tuesday 15 April 1941 two hundred Luftwaffe bombers attacked the city of Belfast and some 900 people were killed. In another Luftwaffe raid on the night of Saturday 4 May 1941 some 150 people were killed.
Ellen Ogle Tate (nee Morton) and her daughters Elizabeth (Bessie) and Evelyn Tate, were buried in Dundonald Cemetery, Co. Down (Grave D2. 392).
Of the many civilians of the Commonwealth whose deaths were due to enemy action in the Second World War, the names of some 67,092 are commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located near St. George’s Chapel in Westminster Abbey, London.
George Linden Tate and Agnes Blackwood were married on 8 April 1944. Agnes Tate died in the Northern Ireland Fever Hospital, 20 Parkmount Parade, Belfast on 18 April 1952 (aged 42); George Linden Tate died on 28 June 1969 (aged 65) and they were buried in Dundonald Cemetery, Co. Down (Grave F3. 1033). Also buried in that grave was Thelma Joyce Arris who died on 14 May 1981 (aged 49).
