John James Tait was a son of James Fowler Tait, who was born in County Down, and Jean Tait, who was born in Scotland. James Fowler Tait worked as a commercial traveller for the Craigmillar Creamery in Edinbugh and he and Jane had four children:

Joseph S. (born around 1885)
Marian (born around 1887)
Douglas (born around 1890)
All four children were born in England before the Tait family moved to Belfast. The Tait family lived in Halcombe Street, Belfast before moving to Holywood.
John James Tait was a marine engineer and he and Jane Cowan McCalla Brown were married on 5 January 1921 in Ballygilbert Presbyterian Church. Jane Cowan McCalla Brown from Bellevue, Holywood was a daughter of Nathaniel McCalla Brown, an iron merchant. Their only son, John McCalla (Jack) Tait, was born on 4 August 1921.
John James Tait was 59 when he died of toxaemia on 13 November 1943. Two days later he was buried in Holywood Cemetery and he is commemorated on Holywood and District War Memorial and in First Holywood Presbyterian Church.
His son, Flight Sergeant (Pilot) John McCalla Tait (No. 1063628), was killed on active service less than eight months earlier, on 26 March 1943.
