BIOGRAPHY

In the CWGC Debt of Honour website it is recorded that Warrant Officer Class III Walter Stanley Smith (No. 1065147) was the husband of Lilian Smith of Portaferry, Co Down, Northern Ireland.

Walter Stanley Smith’s birth was registered in the fourth quarter of 1910 in Portsmouth, Hampshire and he was a son of Edward Henry and Edith Annie Smith.  They had at least four children – Albert, Frederick, Edward, and Walter.

Walter Stanley Smith’s marriage to Lilian Whitaker of Portaferry, Co. Down was registered in the third quarter of 1938 in Colchester, Essex.

Walter Stanley Smith joined the Royal Artillery before the outbreak of war and fought in the 1939/40 France and Belgium Campaign.

Warrant Officer Class III Walter Stanley Smith (No. 1065147) was 29 when he was killed on 1 June 1940 during the evacuation of Allied Forces from Dunkirk.  He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial in France.
