BIOGRAPHY

It is recorded in the CWGC Debt of Honour website that Corporal Martin Ryan (No. 3384041) was the husband of Alice Ryan of Holywood.

Martin Ryan was born on 19 January 1910 in Huggard’s Lane, Killarney, Co. Kerry, and he was a son of Timothy (Tim) and Annie (Ann) Ryan (nee Buckley) who were married on 6 February 1909 in Killarney Roman Catholic Cathedral.

Timothy Ryan worked as a labourer and he and Annie had at least four children:

Martin (born 19 January 1910 in Huggard’s Lane, Killarney)

Michael (born 24 February 1911 in Duckett’s Lane, Killarney)

Patrick (born 4 April 1913 in Duckett’s Lane, Killarney)

Margaret (born 5 February 1915 in Duckett’s Lane, Killarney)

Martin Ryan joined the Army before the outbreak of war and, during the Second World War, he served with the East Lancashire Regiment.

Corporal Martin Ryan (No. 3384041) was 35 when he was killed on 6 April 1945 during the Allied advance through Germany.  He was buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany and there is an inscription on his CWGC headstone:
