BIOGRAPHY

Hugh Erin Reid was born on 11 September 1906 in Carney Hill, Carrowdore and he was a son of Hugh and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Margaret Reid (nee Smith, sometimes Smyth) who were married on 3 October 1900 in Carrowdore Presbyterian Church.  Hugh Reid, a labourer from Carney Hill, Carrowdore was a son of John Reid, a labourer.  Elizabeth Margaret Smith from Derryboye, Crossgar was a daughter of James Smith, a farmer.

The Reid family lived at 8 Carney Hill, Carrowdore.

Hugh Reid Senior worked as an agricultural labourer and he and Elizabeth Margaret Reid (nee Smith) had at least eight children, all of whom were baptised in Carrowdore Presbyterian Church:

Hugh Erin Reid was the husband of Eliza Jane Reid of 20 Raceview Terrace, Newtownards and their daughter Elizabeth was born on 11 February 1929.

During the Second World War Hugh Reid served with the Royal Engineers and it was reported in the Press that he had been accidentally drowned in the River Ouse in Yorkshire.  He was reported missing on 13 March 1940 and his body was recovered from the river on 9 April 1940.  He was 33 when he died.  Hugh’s body was brought to Newtownards and he was buried in Movilla Cemetery on 13 April 1940.  There is an inscription on his CWGC headstone:

Hugh’s wife Eliza Jane died on 9 July 1951 (aged 56) and their daughter, Elizabeth Jones, died on 9 March 2003.  There is an inscription on her grave marker:
