BIOGRAPHY

Eugene Hector McSweeney’s birth was registered in the first quarter of 1918 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire and he was a son of Morgan and Elizabeth M. McSweeney (nee Esling).  Their marriage was registered in the second quarter of 1917 in Merthyr Tydfil.

It is recorded in the 1939 England and Wales Register that Eugene Hector McSweeney was living in Aberdare and working as a coal hewer.  His date of birth is recorded as 25 December 1917.

The marriage of Eugene Hector McSweeney and Jean (Jane) Eccles was registered in the second quarter of 1945 in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire.  Jane Eccles was from Ballywalter and she and Eugene lived in the townland of Ballyatwood, Ballywalter.

During the Second World War Eugene McSweeney served with the Royal Navy (HMS Moira) and he died of disease on 22 May 1947.  It is recalled by people who knew him that, during the war he had spent a protracted period of time in the sea after an enemy attack and this had had a detrimental effect on his health.

Able Seaman Eugene Hector McSweeney (No. D/SSX 31967) died of pyelonephritis on 22 May 1947 and he was buried in Whitechurch Cemetery, Ballywalter on Saturday 24 May 1947.  There is an inscription on his CWGC headstone:

During the Second World War Jane Eccles served with the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and she drove an ambulance on the front line.

Eugene and Jane McSweeney had one child, a daughter named Elizabeth.
