BIOGRAPHY

John Stewart Hill was born on 11 October 1911 and he was a son of Joseph and Jane Hill (nee Stewart) who were married on 20 December 1899 in Windsor Presbyterian Church, Belfast.  Joseph Hill, a commercial traveller and commission agent from Belfast, was a son of John Hill, a millwright.  Jane Stewart from Belfast was a daughter of James Stewart, a solicitor.

Joseph and Jane Hill (nee Stewart) lived at Glenside, Holywood and they had at least four children:

Dorothy (born 10 July 1901 in Belgrave Cottage, Knock)

Alice Kathleen (born 29 August 1907 at Glenside, Holywood)

John Stewart (born 11 October 1911 at Glenside, Holywood)

Elizabeth Patricia (born 18 April 1914 at Glenside, Holywood)

Alice, John and Elizabeth were baptised in Holywood Parish Church of Ireland Church (St. Philip and St. James).

During the Second World War Flight Sergeant John Stewart Hill (No. 1062419) served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and on 21 January 1943 he was one of a seven man crew aboard an Avro Lancaster Mark I aircraft (W4340) that took off at 5.17 pm from RAF Elsham Wolds in Lincolnshire on a mission to bomb Essen in Germany.  The aircraft was lost without trace and all seven crew members are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey.  Along with Flight Sergeant John Stewart Hill the other six crew members who died that evening were:

Flight Sergeant John Stewart Hill (No. 1062419) was 31 when he died, and he is commemorated on Holywood and District War Memorial and in Holywood Parish Church of Ireland Church (St. Philip and St. James).
