William Fox was born on 24 August 1910 and he was a son of John and Charlotte Fox (nee Purcell) of 7 Melbourne Street, Woodvale, Belfast. John Fox worked as a bricklayer’s labourer and he and Charlotte Purcell were married on 26 December 1903 in St. Stephen’s Church of Ireland Church, Belfast. They had at least seven children:

Hannah May (born 10 August 1899 at 11 Brady’s Lane, Belfast)
Annie (born 18 March 1902 at 7 Glasshouse Street, Belfast; died of bronchitis 1 December 1902)
John (born 4 March 1904 in Maternity Hospital, Belfast)
Charlotte (born 5 May 1906 at 73 Joseph Street, Belfast)
William (born 24 August 1910 at 7 Melbourne Street, Belfast)
George (born 19 May 1912 at 7 Melbourne Street, Belfast)
William Fox and Ada Peacocke Miller, who was born on 12 March 1912, were married on 14 September 1935 and they had two children – Margaret Irene and William (Billy).
William Fox joined the Royal Ulster Rifles and he died on 31 December 1939 in the Military Hospital, Knocknagoney, Belfast following an operation. He was buried on 3 January 1940 in Belfast City Cemetery (Glenalina Extension). Some six weeks later his wife Ada was laid to rest beside him.
Ada Fox (nee Miller) died at 3 Castle Street, Bangor on 15 February 1940 (aged 27) after a short illness and their two children were cared for by their maternal grandparents, Robert and Margaret Miller, at 3 Castle Street, Bangor. Irene Fox was four years old and Billy Fox was just over a year old when their parents died.
Five years later their uncle, Billy Miller, was killed. Flying Officer William Watson (Billy) Miller DFC who was Ada Fox’s brother (and Rifleman William Fox’s brother-in-law) died on 24 February 1945.
