Stannage, Robert
Commemorated:
Newtownards Parish Church of Ireland Church (St Mark’s)
BIOGRAPHY
The name Stannage, R is listed twice on the War Memorial Plaque in Newtownards Parish Church of Ireland Church (St Mark’s).
In a report published in the 6 August 1927 edition of the Newtownards Chronicle both were named as Robert and their addresses were reported as John Street Lane, Newtownards and William Street, Newtownards.
Lance Corporal Robert Stannage from John Street who served with the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles (No. 6226) and who was killed in action on 16 November 1914 has been identified but desk searches and public appeals to date have yielded no further information about Robert Stannage from William Street – other than the following:
A descendant of Robert Stannage (No. 6226) has stated categorically that Robert Stannage (No. 6226) was the only Robert Stannage from Newtownards who served during the Great War and the second Robert Stannage listed on the War Memorial Plaque in Newtownards Parish Church of Ireland Church (St Mark’s) is ‘a mistake’.
