BIOGRAPHY

In some records, his surname is spelt Snoddon and in others Snowden.

In the Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914 – 1919 database it is recorded that William John Stevenson Snodden was born in Comber.

William John Stevenson Snodden was born on 3 June 1897 in the townland of Ballymorran, Killinchy and he was a son of Samuel and Jane Snodden (nee Stevenson) who were married on 2 January 1880 in Killinchy Presbyterian Church.  Samuel Snodden from Ballymacashen was a son of Alexander Snodden, a labourer.  Jane Stevenson from Drumreagh was a daughter of Hugh Stevenson, a shoemaker.

Samuel Snodden worked as a labourer and farmer and he and Jane had at least nine children:

William John Stevenson Snodden was baptised in Killinchy Presbyterian Church.

William John Stevenson Snodden lived in the townland of Ballymorran, Killinchy, he enlisted in Downpatrick and served with the 13th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles in 108th Brigade of the 36th (Ulster) Division.

Rifleman William John Stevenson Snodden (No. 19837) was 19 when he was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and he has no known grave.

Rifleman William John Stevenson Snodden (No. 19837) is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France and in Killinchy Presbyterian Church.
