BIOGRAPHY

William James Quail was born on 21 April 1889 in the townland of Ballywarren, Downpatrick and he was a son of William and Margaret Jane Quail (nee Jennings) who were married on 11 July 1888 in Ballynahinch Methodist Church.

William Quail was a farmer and he and Margaret Jane Quail (nee Jennings) had at least two children:

William James (born 21 April 1889 in Ballywarren, Downpatrick)

Margaret Jane (Maggie, born 14 June 1892 in Ballywarren, Downpatrick)

William James Quail’s father died of heart disease on 10 December 1892 (aged 60).

William James Quail’s mother married Samuel McCormick on 6 December 1895 in Dundrum Methodist Church and they lived in the townland of Ballywarren, Downpatrick before moving to Ballyrickard House, Comber.

Samuel McCormick was a farmer and he and Margaret Jane had at least five children:

Florence Mary (born 22 September 1896 in Ballywarren, Downpatrick)

Samuel Henry (born 25 February 1898 in Ballywarren, Downpatrick)

Elizabeth Ann (born 4 July 1900 in Ballywarren, Downpatrick)

Adela Kathleen (born 26 December 1902)

Francis (born 13 January 1906)

William James Quail and his sister Maggie Jane Quail lived with their mother, stepfather, half-sisters and half-brothers.

William James Quail enlisted and he served with the Royal Irish Rifles.  He was wounded on 7 June 1917 and hospitalised in Dublin.  After he recovered he was transferred to the Labour Corps.

William James Quail’s mother and stepfather moved to Twynholm, Kirkcudbright in Scotland and it was there that Lance Corporal Quail died on 22 February 1919.  The cause of death was ‘pneumonia following bronchitis’.

Lance Corporal William James Quail was interred in the family burying ground in Dunsford (St. Mary’s) Church of Ireland Churchyard, Downpatrick on 24 February 1919.
