BIOGRAPHY
The name Andrew McTaggart is listed on Newtownards and District War Memorial and in the booklet produced for the Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony held on Saturday 26 May 1934 he is described as a Private in the Colonials. The organising committee of the day decided to include the names of ex-servicemen who died up to that date from what they considered to be war related causes, whether as a result of wounds or disease.
Andrew McTaggart was one of four brothers on active service in the Great War and his brother Thomas had a military funeral in Newtownards after he died at home on 23 January 1916. Whilst Thomas McTaggart is commemorated in Newtownards Parish Church of Ireland Church (St Mark’s), Andrew McTaggart is not.
In the newspaper report Private Andrew McTaggart was reported to be serving with ‘the Canadian Contingent’.
Desk studies and public appeals to date have yielded no further information as to when Andrew McTaggart died.
