BIOGRAPHY
Joseph Richard Garratt McLean was born on 31 December 1898 in Plas Merdyn, Holywood and he was a son of Robert Edward and Mary Armanella McLean (nee Garratt, born in Dublin) who were married on 22 April 1896 in Holywood Parish Church of Ireland Church (St Philip & St James). Robert Edward McLean from Plas Merdyn, Holywood was a son of James McLean, a solicitor. Mary Armanella Garratt from Rialto, Holywood was a daughter of Joseph R. Garratt, a merchant.
The McLean family lived at 31 Church Road, Holywood.
Robert Edward McLean was a solicitor and he and Mary had three children:

Joseph Richard Garratt (born 31 December 1898 in Plas Merdyn, Holywood)
Mary Elizabeth (born 20 September 1900 in Plas Merdyn, Holywood)
Joseph Richard Garratt McLean was educated at a boarding school in Kilkeel.
During the Great War Lieutenant Joseph Richard Garratt McLean served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and he was 19 when he was killed in action on 9 May 1918.
At the time of Lieutenant Joseph Richard Garratt McLean’s death his parents were living in Mertoun Hall, Holywood. Lieutenant Joseph Richard Garratt McLean’s father, Robert Edward McLean, died on 7 October 1936 (aged 77).
