BIOGRAPHY

In some records his surname is spelt McKibben.

Robert McKibbin was born on 10 January 1890 in Shore Street, Donaghadee and he was a son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Lizzie) McKibbin (nee Fullerton) who were married on 8 April 1889 in Donaghadee Parish Church of Ireland Church.  Andrew McKibbin, a tailor from Donaghadee, was a son of Robert McKibbin, a fisherman.  Lizzie Fullerton from Donaghadee was a daughter of David Fullerton, a labourer.

The McKibbin family lived at 9 Shore Street, Donaghadee.

Andrew McKibbin worked as a tailor and he and Elizabeth had at least six children:

William Thompson (born 21 September 1891 in Shore Street, Donaghadee)

David (born 24 September 1893 in Shore Street, Donaghadee)

Elizabeth (Lizzie, born 26 June 1899 in Shore Street, Donaghadee; died of whooping cough 24 September 1900 aged one year)

The children were baptised in Donaghadee Parish Church of Ireland Church

Their mother Elizabeth died in childbirth on 26 June 1899 (aged 30).

Robert McKibbin enlisted in Belfast and he served with the 13th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles in 108th Brigade of the 36th (Ulster) Division.  He named as his next-of-kin his brother David who lived at 6 Shore Street Donaghadee.

Rifleman Robert McKibbin (No. 2314) was 26 when he was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and he has no known grave.

Rifleman Robert McKibbin (No. 2314) is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France; on Donaghadee and District War Memorial and in Donaghadee Parish Church of Ireland Church.

His father Andrew died on 25 June 1943 (aged 81).
