Robert McKibbin was born on 10 January 1890 in Shore Street, Donaghadee and he was a son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Lizzie) McKibbin (nee Fullerton) who were married on 8 April 1889 in Donaghadee Parish Church of Ireland Church. Andrew McKibbin, a tailor from Donaghadee, was a son of Robert McKibbin, a fisherman. Lizzie Fullerton from Donaghadee was a daughter of David Fullerton, a labourer.
