Newtownards and District War Memorial
The name Thomas McGimpsey is listed on Newtownards and District War Memorial and in the booklet produced for the Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony held on Saturday 26 May 1934 he is described as a Private in the Royal Irish Regiment. The organising committee of the day decided to include the names of ex-servicemen who died up to that date from what they considered to be war related causes, whether as a result of wounds or disease.
The death on active service of Private Thomas McGimpsey Royal Irish Regiment (No. 2768) was reported on page 91 of the 1917 Newtownards Almanac beside the date 14 October 1916.
This Regimental Number (2768) is the same as that reported in the 14 October 1916 edition of the Newtownards Chronicle for Thomas Guiney from Portaferry who served with the Royal Irish Regiment and who was killed in action on 9 September 1916.
Desk searches and public appeals to date have yielded no further information about Thomas McGimpsey.
