It is possible that the SA after James W. McDowell’s name and date of death means he died in South Africa.

There is indicative evidence that James W. McDowell was a son of Thomas and Isabella McDowell (nee Robb) and a grandson of Duncan and Isabella McDowell.

Duncan McDowell, a flax scutcher, and Isabella McDowell had at least four children:

Bella (born around 1841; died 1870 aged 29)

John (born around 1844; died 17 April 1875 at Court Street, Newtownards aged 31)

Thomas (born around 1847; died 26 November 1922 at 22 Landscape Terrace, Belfast aged 75)

Samuel (born around 1853; died 13 September 1920 aged 67).  Samuel McDowell married Margaret Harper (nee Cussack) on 12 June 1883, she died on 27 March 1901.  Samuel McDowell married Jane Petticrew Hamill on 24 December 1902; their daughter, Isabella Crawford McDowell was born on 29 June 1905, worked as a nurse, died on 26 October 2006; their son Duncan McDowell was born on 8 June 1908, died on 22 July 1908; they had a stillborn child born in May 1909).  Jane Petticrew McDowell (nee Hamill) died on 22 November 1958.

Thomas McDowell married Isabella Logan (nee Robb) on 31 January 1872; she had at least four children from her previous marriage to Thomas Logan, a clerk:

William Adam Logan (born 15 May 1867; died 11 September 1897 at 10 Berlin Street, Belfast aged 12; his stepfather Thomas McDowell was with him when he died)

John Robb Logan (born 1 July 1868; died 24 January 1954)

Joseph Logan (born 10 September 1869; died 1870)

Mary Thomasina Logan (born 6 November 1870; married John Greer 2 April 1892; died 8 February 1955)

Thomas and Isabella McDowell (formerly Logan, nee Robb) had at least nine children:

Bella (born 18 October 1872; died from convulsions 1 April 1873)

Harriett (born 30 December 1873; died from an abdominal abscess 12 June 1889)

Thomas (born 30 June 1875; died 3 January 1930)

Samuel Duncan (born 28 January 1877)

Isabella Crawford (born 10 January 1879; died 9 May 1929)

James Ferris (born 29 March 1880 at 10 Berlin Street, Belfast; there is indicative evidence that he changed his name and is the James W. McDowell commemorated in Ballygowan Presbyterian Church)

Wallace (born 19 May 1882; married Agnes Graham; at least two children Thomas 1902, James 1915; died 1948)

Margaret Elizabeth (born 12 September 1883; died 1961)

Amy Constance (born 2 January 1887)

Isabella McDowell (formerly Logan, nee Robb) died on 3 January 1897.

Thomas McDowell, a baker, and Margaret Kirkpatrick were married on 20 January 1902 in College Street Reformed Presbyterian Church, Belfast.  Margaret McDowell (nee Kirkpatrick) died on 17 March 1919; her stepdaughter, Isabel Crawford McDowell, was with her when she died.

Desk searches and public appeals for information are ongoing to try to confirm the working supposition that James Ferris McDowell adopted the name James W. McDowell.
