BIOGRAPHY

The name John McCullough is listed in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI) Roll of Honour 1914 – 1919 for Shore Street Presbyterian Church Donaghadee and it is recorded there that he was killed in action.  He is described as a Rifleman in the R.I.R.

His name is not included on the war memorial in church.  Research to date has not determined the reason for this anomaly.

Rifleman John McCullough (No. 5/5807) served with the Royal Irish Rifles from 26 August 1915 to 26 February 1918 when he was discharged from the Army because of wounds and was no longer fit for war service (Silver War Badge Number 336290).  His address was recorded as 39 Manor Street, Donaghadee.

John McCullough and Charlotte Drennan were married on 16 February 1920 in Millisle Presbyterian Church.  John McCullough, a postman from 39 Manor Street, Donaghadee was a son of James McCullough, a fitter.  Charlotte Drennan (born 9 May 1899 in Millisle) from 5 Victoria Avenue, Donaghadee was a daughter of David Drennan, a tailor, and Agnes Drennan (nee Hamill).

John and Charlotte McCullough (nee Drennan) had a son, James McCullough (born 14 May 1920 at Victoria Gardens, Donaghadee), and it was noted at civil registration that his grandmother, Sarah Ann McPeake, was present at his birth; his father was an apprentice tailor.

Desk searches and public appeals to date have yielded no further information about this soldier.
