BIOGRAPHY
The death of Private Herbert Isaac McConnell (No. 2136), Army Veterinary Corps was reported in the 7 July 1916 edition of the County Down Spectator under the headline Bangor Man Dies of Wounds.
Herbert Isaac McConnell was born on 21 September 1866 in Magheralin and he was a son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Eliza) McConnell (nee Patterson) who lived in Moira. Arthur and Elizabeth were married on 8 December 1850 in Lisburn Church of Ireland Cathedral.
Herbert Isaac McConnell and Eva Elizabeth Rowland (sometimes Roland, sometimes Rolland) were married on 22 September 1897 in Creggan Church of Ireland Church, Crossmaglen. Herbert Isaac McConnell was a police constable stationed in Cullyhanna Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks, Co Armagh and he was a son of Arthur McConnell, a farmer. Eva Elizabeth Rowland from Newtownhamilton, Co Armagh was a daughter of Thomas Rowland, a farmer.
Herbert Isaac McConnell was a constable in the RIC and he and Eva Elizabeth had three children:
Thomas John Roland (born 20 November 1899 in Dunmurry; died of bronchitis 15 days later, on 5 December 1899)
Elizabeth (born 18 April 1905 in Dunmurry)
Herbert Rowland (born 6 May 1907 in Dervock; at that time the McConnell family was living in Cushendall)
In 1911 the McConnell family was living in Tullyvallen, Newtownhamilton, Co Armagh and in CWGC records their address was 28 Taylor Street, Newton-on-Ayr in Scotland.
Herbert Isaac McConnell enlisted in London and he served with the Army Veterinary Corps.
Private Herbert Isaac McConnell was 49 (51 in CWGC records) when he died on 16 May 1916 in 2nd Birmingham War Hospital. He was buried in Birmingham (Lodge Hill) Cemetery, Warwickshire.
