BIOGRAPHY

In some records his first forename is spelt Rowland.

Roland Hugh Mason was born on 6 February 1895 in the townland of Tieveshilly, Portaferry and he was a son of James and Catherine Mason (nee Savage) who were married on 16 April 1884 in Portaferry Roman Catholic Church.  James Mason was a son of Patrick Mason, a farmer.  Catherine Savage was a daughter of Edward Savage, a farmer.

The Mason family lived initially with Catherine’s widowed mother, Margaret Savage

James Mason was a farmer and he and Catherine had seven children:

Margaret Isabella (born 21 April 1885 in Tieveshilly; died 7 November 1903 aged 18)

Mary Anne (born 14 October 1886 in Tieveshilly)

Catherine Jane (born 12 February 1889 in Tieveshilly)

James Joseph (born 7 March 1891 in Tieveshilly)

Roland Hugh (born 6 February 1895 in Tieveshilly)

Patrick Edward (born 19 February 1898 in Tieveshilly)

John Gerard (born 4 February 1901 in Tieveshilly)

After leaving school Roland Hugh Mason worked on his father’s farm.

He enlisted in Portaferry and served with the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment.

Private Roland Hugh Mason (No. 15190) was 22 when he died of spinal fever on 7 July 1917.  He was buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
