BIOGRAPHY
Robert Marshall was born on 16 June 1889 in Movilla Street, Newtownards and he was a son of Robert James and Susanna Marshall (nee Wallace) who were married on 12 August 1879 in Newtownards Parish Church of Ireland Church (St Mark’s). Robert James Marshall from Francis Street, Newtownards was a son of James Marshall, a labourer. Susanna Wallace (aged 19) from Francis Street, Newtownards was a daughter of Thomas Wallace, a dealer.
The Marshall family lived in Movilla Street, Greenwell Lane and Greenwell Street, Newtownards.
Robert Marshall Senior worked as a general labourer and he and Susannah had nine children including:

William (born 30 August 1884 in Little Francis Street, Newtownards; died 2 February 1892)
Mary Jane (born 4 September 1886 in Little Francis Street, Newtownards)

At least five of their children died in infancy.
James and Isabella Marshall were baptised in Greenwell Street Presbyterian Church Newtownards.
Robert Marshall joined the Army around 1907 and served in India before the Great War. He went to the Front and served with the 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Initially Private Robert Marshall (No. 9691) was posted as missing in action and later it was officially confirmed that he must be presumed to have been killed in action at Gallipoli on 21 August 1915.
