BIOGRAPHY

John Allen was born on 4 August 1894 in Killinchy Street, Comber and he was a son of Henry and Rebecca Allen (nee Ferguson) who were married on 13 January 1888 in Dundonald Presbyterian Church.  Henry Allen from Comber was a son of Joseph Allen, a labourer.  Rebecca Ferguson from Carnesure was a daughter of James Ferguson, a labourer.

The Allen family lived in the townland of Carnesure, Comber and later at 4 High Street, Comber.

Henry Allen was a garden labourer and he and Rebecca had ten children:

Prior to enlisting in Comber John Allen worked as a farm labourer.  He served with the 13th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles in 108th Brigade of the 36th (Ulster) Division and he was wounded on 1 July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.

During his recuperation he was posted to the 18th Battalion and when he was fit again for active service he was posted to the 12th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.

On 24 August 1917 he made his will at Clandeboye.

Rifleman John Allen (No. 17142) was 23 when he was killed in action on 22 November 1917 and his property and effects were received by his sister, Agnes Jane Allen, of 4 High Street, Comber. He was buried in Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St Laurent-Blangy, Pas de Calais, France.
