BIOGRAPHY

After Private William John Coulson died, his parents lived at 6 Shandon Drive, Bangor.

In the Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914 – 1919 database it is recorded that Private William John Coulson (No. PS/8837) was born in Dublin.

In the 1901 and 1911 census records it is recorded that William John Coulson (Willie) was born in County Donegal.

William John Coulson was born on 20 November 1889 in Ardara, Co Donegal and he was a son of the Rev John Coulson, a Methodist Minister who was born in County Fermanagh and Jane (Jeanie) Anne Coulson (nee Orr) who was born in County Tyrone.

John Coulson and Jeannie Orr were married on 14 June 1881 in the bride’s home in the townland of Corranarry, Gortin, Co Tyrone.  John Coulson from Castlederg was a son of Henry Coulson, a farmer.  Jeannie Orr from Corranarry was a daughter of James Orr, a farmer.

John and Jeannie Coulson (nee Orr) had five children including:

James Henry (born 23 March 1882 in Corranarry; died 25 April 1936 aged 54)

Sarah Elizabeth (Elsie, born 9 March 1884 in Bridgetown, Co Donegal; died 12 April 1963)

Margretta (Meta, sometimes May, born 12 November 1888 in Ardara, Co Donegal; died 4 April 1900 aged 13 – headstone)

William John (Willie, born 20 November 1889 in Ardara, Co Donegal)

In 1901 the Coulston family was living in Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone.

In 1911 the Coulston family was living in Ballynahinch, Co Down.

William John Coulson enlisted in Dublin and he served with the 24th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).

Private William John Coulson (No. PS/8837) was killed in action on 28 July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and at the time of his death his parents were living at 6 Shandon Drive, Bangor.

Private William John Coulson (No. PS/8837) has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Debt of Honour refers to Private William John Coulson’s ‘late’ father but William John Coulson’s father John died on 1 October 1924 (aged 79) and his will was probated in Belfast.  His mother Jeannie died on 5 June 1937 (aged 78) and they were buried in Drumragh Old Graveyard, Omagh, Co Tyrone.
